Static Theme Conversion

On this week's podcast, Bob tackles one of the most asked questions: How do I convert a static html/css template into a Drupal 6 theme? We cover the basics in about 10 minutes but it's just the tip of the iceburg. (forgive Bob for his scatterbrained approach...not enough coffee before recording today...)

Great show as usual

Rob, this is very helpful, thank you!

Thanks

as always, quick and helpful tutorial

Simple textual guide on converting themes also available

Hey Bob great video :) You might be interested in linking to my article on Drupal.org as an add-on textual reference to this same information:
Convert any website layout or template into a Drupal theme - easily!

I went ahead and added a recommendation for this video to the article.

Also there's one single page.tpl.php variable which you might want to highlight in the show notes, $closure ... I'm not sure what side effects can occur when this is not included, but my understanding is that all Drupal themes should always include it at the bottom, right before the closing body tag.

about admin block section

There is one problem with drupal 5 themes is that the admin block section donot show the theme which we select. It suddenly change the theme to garland theme.

Really Useful Now I'm ready

How to move content around on the page

Hey Bob, i really enjoi your podcasts here at mustardseed it have really learnd me alot..

I have a little question about the whole static theme thing.

I am trying to make a drupal site, with a diff layout for each content type, i know how to generate the CSS for the diff content types so the layout thing is all good, i just can't seem to figure out how to get the the generated code, title, body, date, etc, to be in the right placeses..

is there some drupal code that i can wrap in the php file??

fx the date has a of the node made by drupal has a (i grabed this with firebug)..

Wonderful!

I can't wait to try this out!! Thanks for demystifying this process, you rule!

That was incredibly helpful. Thank you so much!

Thanx Bob!

Splendid help!!!

Wonderful teacher with the right amount of coffee in the body;-)

Brilliant!

This is THE best explanation of how to do this that I have found on the web. I'm now able to take a giant leap forward to start theming! Thanks so much!

Great content

Thanks for the great explanation. I've already implemented one Drupal theme for a client, but I'm sure I will be coming back to review.

Thanks also for affirming the Gospel with the excellence of your work.

BTW, I have yet to find a PHP editor on the Mac that meets my needs (specifically an open source one that can edit files on remote servers). What are you using in the tutorial and what would you recommend?

Thanks again.

Try Eclipse or Coda

Hey JMI...
In the screencast I'm using Coda...but lots of PHP folks prefer Eclipse. Hope that helps!

I'll take 'em for a spin

Bob,
Thanks for the recommendations.

BTW (again), what's the story with the time stamps? 3:43 pm? Is your website hosted in Australia?

Just watched the "Creating Variables" tutorial and it was greatly informative.

I stand corrected

Make that Iceland.

Thanks!

My learning curve of Drupal theming got a great boost now! Thank you!

thank you

thanks for that very clear, very helpful.

Great video tutorial!

Wow... having tried doing theming using only the documentation - good though it is - I realised how much more beneficial a video can be, because there are so many things you did which you didn't specifically mention, but which I picked up on and which turned light bulbs on in my head as to what I've been doing wrong. Fantastic starting point for beginners and Drupal newbies like me!

Very Nice!!!

Great Screen casts. Keep it coming. Thank so much for sharing your knowledge.

Awsome

Awsome, great tutorial

For Open Source newby's

Bob, THANKS - I'm pleased to learn about OSWD.org (Open Source Web Design).

In case anyone watching isn't familiar with the practical details of creating derivatives of open-source material, notice that there was a copyright notice in the HTML version of the theme. Darren Hester retains the copyright, but he generously licensed his work so granting us permission to freely use and even amend his design and code for non-commercial purposes (he doesn't grant the right to us to re-sell a new version of his work).

This generous license does state that he should be given attibution when we re-use or amend his work.

Creative Commons BY-NC is just one of many open-source or permissive sharing licenses out there. Let's all honor the licenses of copyright holders whose work we have been invited to re-use, in gratitude for their granting of some rights rather than reserving them all.

Thanks

Thanks for the great podcast, very helpful

excellent!

excellent, nicely described and to the point. I always believe that story telling is talent and skill as well as describing a difficult things in simple and easy way, and I am quite sure that you have got these talent and skill so my congratulations. I am a new member of CMS club who is trying to learn drupal and love to watch your tutorials. Keep it up!
I would be happy to see some tutorial from you in near future about cck form fields formatting as we all know that drupal alway show fields in vertical order, what about if you want to rearrange or reorder those fields in horizontal or changing their weights etc etc

Thanks

More Info

That's a superb video and helped a great deal to understand the conversion of css/html to drupal template on the basic level.
However, what would be even greater if you can do part 2, or even 3, to get this fruitopia theme even more developed into a more finished site. Or if you can recommend a website or a book that can help to do that that would be awesome. Thank you again for wonderful tutorials.

One more thing. For some reason I haven't seen amazing drupal example sites. There are tons of wordpress themes, but not for Drupal. Some ok, but nothing special. I was wondering if anyone know any sites that are beautifully done in drupal. Not boxy and not something with blue header, grey left column and right grey column. Thank you for suggestions.

Thanks!

This was really great. Much appreciated!

Nice video for a beginner of drupal themes

Awesome! Short and Neat Video. Really appreciated.

Other 20%?

Bob,

I have actually done this far on my own, but on some sites it doesn't work the same - Drupal doesn't lay things out how you tell it to (at least in my experience). Could you possibly do another tutorial on the last 20% sometime? I would really like that - I can't seem to figure it out...

Thanks for the great start, would love to see a part 2

Thank you for the tutorial, would love to see a part two diving a little deeper into some of the 20% you talked about.

Thanks a lot

Bob, Thanks!!! Helps a bunch.
