In today's episode, Bob shows you how to create a Drupal 6 theme from scratch by creating 3 simple files...yes, it's really that easy. He also starts using the ScreenFlow software which means you have to look at his face. Sorry!

This episode rocks my face off!

Great episode. I really like the short straight forward and informative format of this vidcast. I see you have a zen folder in your themes folder, do you use zen as a basic starting point or do you always start from scratch?
From Scratch
Hey Kyle...
I'm glad the format is good for you. I wasn't sure if this really informal format would be good or not...
As for Zen, I've actually NEVER used Zen except for in this podcast ;) I installed it and used it as a base because it's simpler than Garland and less ugly (IMO), so I figured I'd use it as just my 'working theme'. I start from scratch 100% of the time because (as you see) it's so easy! I don't see a reason not to if you do any html/css coding at all. As I said, why start from a theme which may contain a bunch of stuff you don't need or fully understand?
Thanks for watching!
Good show...
Good episode on Drupal 6 theming. Gave me a good kick in the butt to starting playing around with it.
And ScreenFlow rocks.... I'm glad you went with it.

Very cool
Thanks for doing this cast. You actually gave me some hope that I may be able to create my own theme. It was just enough to get me going.
Thank you Mr Mustard Seed :)
Just have to add, that I dig
Just have to add, that I dig the whole seeing your mug while doing the cast. It added a nice personal touch.
I'm with techmate
I agree. I've been really scared of Drupal theming for a long time. Been trying to start but not really knowing where to begin. I tried reading the official Drupal 6 theming guide and forget about it! I was lost after a couple of pages.
I'm still a little frightened, but this little video has put my mind at ease a little bit and I may even give starting from scratch a try soon.
Great Podcast
Rob,
Once again - a great short and sweet podcast with lots of info. You asked for suggestions and one I would like to ask for combines photo shop (or the image tool of your choice) and slicing of an image to create a more than basic theme. I've heard and read some about this but I would like to see it demonstrated.
Thanks and keep up the great work.

Template Files
Hello Rob,
Love the podcast. (This one and geeksandgod) You mentioned in this podcast that you "cheat" and use a template. I was wondering if those templates are available anywhere so that I can "cheat," too. Thanks for you you help. And keep up the great work. Looking forward to seeing at the Geeks and God conference.
Unfortunately....
Unfortunately, I have to draw the line somewhere :) I really can't give out those files because they're pretty much the lifeblood of my business :) I'm happy to give tips and help you along (and will definitely do that at the conference) but, as strictly a business decision, I had to set a cut-off point for what I give away...and actually giving my work away was that cut-off.
Sorry to disappoint...if there's anything, though, that you'd like me to cover on here in how you might write your own, please ask and I'm happy to do an episode on that! Thanks for watching!
I knew it was easy!
Thanks Rob,
I loved it, and the Screencast is awesome also. I knew it was easier than I was making it out to be, just hadn't found someone to show me. Now I have and the door is wide open. Would definitely like to see more on creating the look of the theme now that I understand how to lay it out in the .tpl files. Thanks again for the great content.

Very nice video!
It is certainly de-mystifying the concept of theming for Drupal. The basics of it are familiar as they are similar to what was used to build my current site. However I have a request. One of the things that I have issues with on the current system that I'm using (DNN 4.9) is how to style the main navigation menu. I basically just threw my site together only to realize that I was unable to make any real progress on how the menu looked. Now, I am going to move it over to Drupal, but (along with many other things I have questions about) my main concern is how to style your main menu (from "scratch" if realistic/possible)? Can you do something on that?
Rob
Suggestion
Your videocasts simply rocks!
Man I really liked the ones with the CSS stuff and this one, theme basics in Drupal 6.
I would like to do a suggestion, just in case you´re wondering what to talk about in some future videocast, why don´t you talk about Profiles? How to theme then?
There´s some info at Drupal.org, but there´s no explanation on how to add module specific stuff.
In example, the activity module, that adds a little stream about what the user have been doing in your site... how do you manage to add that in your personal user-profile.tpl?
Anyway, it was just an idea.
Again, you rock my friend!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the community!

Very nice, thank you
Just wanted to add my thanks as well. Excellent stuff there. I think I comprehend most of what I just saw, but I am still in the dark as to how to determine where my regions show up. Could someone point me to any info about that?
Thanks for the great work.
An excellent starter!
Thanks for this quick yet useful run-through! You covered enough to lay down the basics of the theme process without including too many confusing, mildly related details. This is a great start for an experienced web developer who is new to Drupal. Cheers!
Thanks for doing this cast.

thanks was very helpful! :)
thanks was very helpful! :)
thanks!
Great tutorial!
Keep up the great work.
Nice Tutorial!
Much thanks for the tutorial, it was very helpful - I'll be back for more!
very helpful
Thanks for the video, very concise. Only I wish i had seen it yesterday. Took me three hours to discover what you ran through in your vid ;-)
A continuation on how to theme specific node types and such would be awesome!
Redirect Loop
I followed your video and after ironing out a couple of bugs I receive the following error:
Redirection limit for this URL exceeded. Unable to load the requested page. This may be caused by cookies that are blocked.
Any ideas as to why this would appear?
I've searched around but can't seem to find a decent answer.
Thanks
Templates - cheat ;-)
Hi - totally nice podcast ;-)
Is it possible to download your cheat-templates. Just to see the basic stuff. Tried to copy/paste something from drupal.org - but something is wrong, and I'm not sure what it is.

Gracias!
The internet has great power and you use it marvelously! Thanks for your excellent videos.
Rob, your a cool guy.
Rob, your a cool guy. Voldamort thinks so too.
How do u change the stuff inside the Drupal regions (sidebar, header ...)?
Expelliamus IE!!
Bob, That was a great
Bob,
That was a great podcast. I've been having a hunt around for someone who can explain how to start themes from scratch. I already have a reasonable undestanding of css/html and php. Yours sir is the best one I've found. Not only very informative, but humorous too!
Keep up the good work.
Cheers

Keep up the good works!!!
Nice job on these casts. Strongly weighing the advantages and disadvantages of using joomla versus drupal and there doesn't seem to be much for theme designers to get you jump started till I found your casts. It's really cool cause I love your primary mission. Glory to GOD on high man!!
still rocking
Bob,
Your p'casts are top notch! You do an effing great job of making some otherwise potentially dry techno bits interesting, brain-wrap-around-able & fun.
Very sorry that you hung up the p'cast hat. You're a great instructor. Hope time allows you to don the hat again and post some more Drupal videos down the road.
Best.
Peter
