Triggers and Actions

On this week's podcast Bob gives a quick overview of Triggers and Actions functionality in Drupal 6 core. This 'cause and effect' function allows you to automate your site a bit to make it more interactive and save you some time managing it. This podcast shows an example of how to use these to send an email to a site admin when a comment needs moderation. This is the final video in this podcast series for the forseeable future. Thanks for all your support of this podcast, hopefully we'll be able to provide more videos again but for now, we hope our past videos will be a big help to getting everyone started with Drupal!

Hey Bob, I'm sorry to hear of your upcoming hiatus but wanted to take this opportunity to thank you so much for all of your quality instruction has helped a lot of us. Thanks for all you do. Blessings! -NP
Hi Bob, thanks for your awesome podcasts, they've helped me a LOT trying to tame drupal through the year. I hope this is not the last one we see, because yours are the only podcasts which I can really understand (you are not the usual nerdy, uncharismatic and techie guy). About this podcast in particular, is it possible to make a trigger which sends an email like in the podcast but to a editor or person in charge of a specific content type? Say for example if I have an interview section (obviously in CCK) which can be moderated only by one specific user and the admin of course, to send him and him only a mail to moderate the comments send to an interview. Thanks again for you're work. Is this hiatus only on mustadseed or is it on all kinds of podcasting?
Since more than a year I am working on my Drupal Skills! You helped me a lot with all your video podcastd to improve my ability to use Drupal. Just want to say THANK YOU from germany !!! I was always looking forward to the next episodes and I am sure, I will miss Bob as my Drupal teacher :-(
Hello Bob It's realy unbelivable that you will stop this podcast series. I enjoyed every single episode. In the german community http://www.drupalcenter.de you got the nice nick "bob the builder". A lot of community members took your episodes as a reference supporting the requesters. Bye, bye Bob - hopefully you come back very soon. I already miss you and you very useful hints. Regards and all the best for your future Roger
hi Bob, you videos really helped me to understand drupal. i am sure these videos will be a great drupal resources for beginners in future. thanks for your effort. with love from Dubai, UAE. noussh.
Hey Bob, I'm really sorry to hear that there are no more podcasts in the forseeable future. I'm not a very skilled Drupal User and therefore your podcasts helped me VERY MUCH in understanding, using and altering drupal. I feel like I lose a friend because you are such a charismatic person and a very good teacher....Thanks again for helping the community by sharing your knowledge! Best wishes, toch
Hey Bob... as with the other comments, thanks very much for sharing some of your knowledge and skills. It sounds like your business is getting kind of busy. Good things come to those who share. You have shared, now it is time to reap your reward - good luck. NL
from Germany... really enjoyed your Drupal Lessons. Learned alot. Hop you´re gonna be back soon. Christian
Hey Bob, your video podcasts truly are a good thing and I sure hope this is not the end. I stumbled onto Drupal just over a year ago and Mustardseed Media together with your joint podcasts over at geeks&god were the first sites that I became familiar with and kept returning to for Drupal resource/info. The MSM-podcasts really got me hooked into Drupal(no pun intended) and even to this day I'm always looking out for your next installment - sad to see them go. Just wanna say thanks for all the effort you put into producing them and for helping me to understand many different aspects of Drupal in a simple way. Great work !! Shrenster
Thankyou Bob, For all your kindness. May you have a great time pursuing your detour. Hopefully you will be back soon, making great podcasts. Even if it's a paid membership one. I would also like to know, if it's ok, how you deploy your sites into production. Could you please provide a short brief outline on your methodology. cheers
These were awesome podcasts and taught me a great deal. Maybe if you can't afford to do podcasts for free you could offer a Drupal Training once a year for prospective themers and developers. Technical trainers never seem to go hungry!
Bob, Thanks for all that you do to advance the Gospel with technology. And thanks for helping all of us to do the same. You are the man. Jason
Hi Bob, Thanks for the time and effort you have invested into the Drupal/Church community. I pray for you to be blessed as much as you have blessed others... Russ
I sooooooooooooooooooooo much hope that you will go on with the Drupal podcast. Starting to learn Drupal this year was'n that easy. I read a book but still didn't really know where to start with my project and how to solve my problems. With your podcast I understood Drupal more and more. So thank you very much for this clear and wonderfull instructions! You are a very sympathic guy and I will miss viewing your podcasts.
Great work man, thanks for all the Drupal awesomeness you've provided in all these podcasts. Best of luck with your business. K.Webb
There is great merit in what you started here - thank you.. you have shifted many peoples perspective. Peace be with you...
I am also starting out as a freelance drupal developer and would like some insight into your methodologies and how you plan your projects I enjoy all your work and hope you come back soon cheers mate
Thanks for the fish. end the podcast right here. It jumped the shark when you asked for money. I love how you profit from all the hard work of all the developers for "God"/profit.
Thanks for your help with the community. Your podcasts were always first rate. It was easy to see you spent a lot of time producing them. It saddens me when someone who has helped so many gets criticized for trying to put bread on the table. The critics don't understand that most drupal modules are paid for - that the developers don't create these out of the goodness of their hearts, but rather because they are hired to do so. Good luck!
This is not a hater post. While I really appreciate greatly all the hard work Rob has done here and personally am a great fan, the promotional value as both a contributer and Google ranking as a Drupal expert and SEO is the initial value for all these extremely helpful video casts created. Let's be honest, it's to draw clients in and thats a good thing. While so many developers do what they do for reasons beyond profit (not that profit it bad), I just feel that its in bad taste to develop an audience and later ask for money for “costs”. You are not Leo Laporte. Hosting costs for a small Drupal audience are really not that extravagant these days unless you are pushing “massive” numbers. Anyway I love what Rob has done here. Its extremely helpful to many people. And I hope Rob feels free to delete this post, I will not feel bad about it, it just one man's opinion. I think I unfairly hold him to higher standard because I bought into the whole Christian values thing. Regardless, it's been a good ride. I've said my peace, right or wrong.
Hey Bob, the podcasts have been amazing - for someone like me who only started web/drupal the beginning of this year your podcasts are the most useful resource out there along with the drupal site/forums. Hope to see you back soon. God bless, Nic
This is directed to Anonymous ("Not a Hater": September 1, 2009 - 7:05am.), First off, thanks much for posting as Anonymous, it's always great to be transparent when publicly labeling someone a hypocrite. "Let's be honest, it's to draw clients in and thats a good thing." a.k.a: Bob's motives are not pure as he's really just wanting to advertise his business. So what? Bob is running a small business; which I can personally attest is no easy task. Even is this was the sum total of his drive; I see no problem with it. But take just one step back; Bob is essentially training potential competition. I think Bob really digs Drupal and wants to help others. But even if his motive is somehow more sinister, what's the problem? "I just feel that its in bad taste to develop an audience and later ask for money for 'costs'." Why? Bob, like the rest of us, has wants and needs money can buy. It does not matter if he is developing websites, creating training, or selling jellybeans in a tin cup. It is at his discretion what he sells his wares for and at yours to purchase or not. What's the problem? "Hosting costs for a small Drupal audience are really not that extravagant these days unless you are pushing 'massive' numbers." First off, it does not matter what Bob's costs are. He may choose or not choose what knowledge he chooses to share. Clearly his time is much more of an issue than any costs associated with hosting. What's the problem? "I think I unfairly hold him to higher standard because I bought into the whole Christian values thing." What? Seriously? Christian Values? What are you talking about? I'm a Christian but get really frustrated as I think far too many of the faithful among us have an entitlement attitude which is very, very ugly. Perhaps the church should take a long hard look at how open source communities work and consider tweaking our theology a bit. Bob does not owe us anything. He has shared a lot which has benefited a lot of folks. If he chooses to pick this up again, that would be wonderful. But he is under absolutely no obligation to do so. Anonymous, be thankful for what Bob has already done; don't attack him for not doing more. Blessings! -NP
i'm trying to publish content using tigger when role = paid_members, but i cant get it to work. Paid bounty for answer if i can get his email. cheers Jeff@moxwai.com
I hope you do come back and make more as you've been the MOST helpful in getting me to learn Drupal. Easy to understand, concise, and quickly giving the information. So many give the information either quickly but very confusion or take forever to get to the point. You've been great and I just found your site a few weeks ago. I'm going through videos that look helpful and each time I learn something new.
I'm proposing to permorf official iconizing of "Bob the Great" in the Temple of Drupal!!! O_O Who votes for?
These videos have been so much fun and learning. Thank you!
Thanks Bob for all your great podcasts. I am new to Drupal and have learned more from watching these than any other source of drupal instructional materials! I have a question that has to do with creating image galleries... So far everything that I have seen or read that explains how to make an image gallery, consists of some form of creating a gallery page with thumbnails that when clicked either link to a different page or a thickbox type display that presents the images in a pop-up format. But what if you want to create a gallery page that has, say, thumbnails of the images in a sidebar region which when clicked, cause a larger version of the photo to display in the main content area of the same page, and leaves the thumbnails exactly where they where on the sidebar region in order to provide an easy visual navigation region to the gallery. I would love to hear your thoughts on how to do this or see a podcast that demonstrates how a layout may be created, using views, in which one region of the page controls what is shown in another region of the same page. Thanks again for all your great work! —P
Bob. Don't listen to the haters. The energy you and Matt have given to the community far outweighs any personal gain you may have received. I look at it as SYMBIOTIC. Perhaps even MUTUALISTIC. You rock....and I am convinced you will continue to. Above all I believe you and Matt have been FAITHFUL and you know what I mean. You have been open and transparent and I truly believe that anyone who really followed you and related to you, learned from you, was "there" as you welcomed a new life into the world...began to raise a family....and care for a wife, wasn't surprised that this chapter in your life would come to an end. I am convinced that your walk with the Lord is strong enough and more important than some bytes in the cloud and He will direct your steps. I believe He will also direct your stops. I look forward to seeing what He is going to do next through you and hope I am privileged enough to see it. Thank you for all you have done for His Church and for helping me to recognize my calling. While I may not know you as well as some, I am a good judge of character and know that you are true. Anyone who thinks differently really doesn't know you. Thank you Bob and Matt, I hope I can contribute half as much as you have.
Most of the materials were very informative and I was bit disappointed by "The End " chapter. It wasn't clear by the episode126 what you are upto but wish you all the best for your future endeavour(s).
