Basic CSS Layout

On this week's podcast, Bob goes back to basics. Many people are still trying to make their way from table-based html layouts to pure CSS layouts. This week's episode is about the bare bones basics of creating a 2 column, fixed width CSS layout from scratch. It uses very little code to start creating standards-friendly sites...let us know, in the comments, if it was helpful for you!

Good primer on CSS. This would have been nice to have a few years a go when I was learning CSS :) One thing you may want to cover at some point is selecting the right DOCTYPE. I noticed you were using HTML 4.0 TRANSITIONAL in this case. It was easy to tell since all of the HTML tags were caps :) Thanks for the hard work on these videos. I love them. Shrop
You busted me shrop. Normally I use an XHTML doctype (or HTML strict)...but as you see, I grabbed this starter html template from a random site. Normally, I'd encourage at least 'strict' if not XHTML. I don't know much about doctypes, so I may not be the one to talk on this. I recommend checking out doctype info from Zeldman's book...it's basically where I learned everything I know on the issue with regards to a Web Standards world.
Great episode. Just what I needed. I had one question. In your example you made a two column layout. But, as it stands right now, both columns have different heights. Is there anyway to make the two columns the same height, while still maintaining a dynamic height. So, what I don't want to do is just type height: ???. Thanks in advance. You rock!!!
Zeldman's book covers doctypes and related things pretty well. I love that book. Regardless of the doctype used, the point was still on target to demo a 2 column layout. Thanks! Shrop
Can you tell me what your editor is again?? I can't remember what you said at the conference. Also, can you post the text you wrote for the example you used? Thanks!! YOU ROCK MAN!!
thanks man... that was helpful and refreshing..

I'm thankful to the one who wrote this passage. I always read and write this style of articles. youtube Also, as a daily writer, I present my respects to the all writers. Lately, I have watched a video resembling that in facebook. I research in all areas. In my opinion, people should research first and write then. Regards...
